Since the release of the PlayStation 5 in 2020, you may have heard of something used in it “liquid metal”. What is this? Is it any good? Does it work better than thermal paste? We will hopefully answer these questions below for those who want to find out more.
For those of you who are having problems with your Playstation 5 overheating or randomly turning off. We offer Liquid Metal Replacement as well full internal cleans and many other services for your PS5. Just give us a call.
With Better Hardware in your PlayStation 5 than older generations such as the PS4 and PS4 Pro, it needs a better cooling system to prevent your system from overheating. You could use powerful fans, better air flow design, and using thermal paste. Sony decided using liquid metal was a better idea as it better at conducting than thermal paste.
The liquid metal used in the PlayStation 5 is a metal alloy called Galinstan, which is composed of gallium, indium, and tin. It is called “liquid metal” because it is a liquid at room temperature. It transfers heat at 73 W/mK, compared to thermal paste which transfers heat at only 8-9 W/mK. Just like thermal paste it fills the gap between the APU and the heat sink, allowing heat to transfer. It is also now being used in some Gaming Laptops.
Sometimes the APU/heat sink chips can form dry spots. This is where the liquid metal has oxidized which can cause some problems that result in an overheating Playstation 5.
Removing and Replacing the Liquid Metal as we do at aGeek will remove the dry spot and result in proper cooling and no more overheating.
Even though the chance is very low that it will leak out, it is our opinion that the PS5 should be kept horizontal rather than vertical, this is to prevent the liquid metal moving and causing dry spots and is able to stay evenly spread out across the surface of the chip.
This is a very serious issue where the liquid metal leaks from the seal inside the console spilling onto the main board. Any leaked liquid metal can short the device and cause more damage. We can help remove this and perform necessary board level repairs should the worst happen. Afterwards we replace the Seal and the Liquid Metal to ensure proper cooling.
Safer? Yes. Better for cooling? No. Changing the liquid metal for thermal paste may sound better as it doesn’t cause all the issues discussed above but it won’t provide the cooling that is required by the PS5 APU and will eventually overheat or dry out the thermal paste so stick with it and either opt for a Cooling Stand which we also stock or Lay the Console Horizontal.
